Austin H. Brown papers, 1830-1901.

This collection contains Brown's personal and business correspondence. It includes letters from his father, William J. Brown, his brother, George, cousin, John Ferguson. Also included are letters to President Grover Cleveland recommending Brown for a federal appointment, a report on fraudulent claims in the Horse Claims division, a scrapbook of theatrical programs and announcements for the Metropolitan Theater, and Masonic and Democratic Party programs.

Brown was born in Rush County, Ind., and moved to Indianapolis in 1837 with his family. His father, William J. Brown, was a politician, and Brown followed his father into Democratic politics. Brown worked with his father on the STATE SENTINEL, was appointed collector of internal revenue for Indiana in 1866, and in 1877 was clerk of Marion County. Thomas Andrews Hendricks (September 7, 1819 – November 25, 1885) was an American politician and lawyer from Indiana who served as the 16th governor of Indiana from 1873 to 1877 and the 21st vice president of the United States from March to November 1885.
